This is one of the most popular divination tools in the witchy practice. There are a lot of misbeliefs associated with crystal gazing, and now I would like to brush off these.
Crystal balls can be seen in many witchy films visualizing the craft; even though our ancestors did not use them very often - only the rich people could afford it, the poors not, but they used similar surfaces to practice this type of divination. I was written before a post in which I said our ancestors used those stuffs which could be found in their homes because 1. they did not have enough money to buy a toolkit dedicated to their spiritual beliefs, 2. if they could buy these items, it would be equal to the certain death because of the witch hunting, so they used what they could and what they found, for example their athame was a bigger knife from their kitchen etc. Nowadays we are very lucky because we do not need to fight against witch hunting in the medieval forms, we can practice our faith without fear of death, and of course we mostly can afford to buy and store tools dedicated to our practice.

The crystal ball came to Europe in the 5th century but not widely. It came supposedly from Australia or New-Guinea. The first crystal balls were clear crystals like beryllium and clear quartz.
The divination with the crystal ball is not as easy as it seems. You need to lean on your intuition. Mostly you will not be able to see clear visions in the crystal ball. Often you will only feel something strange, or you get impressions, senses. These are sometimes so unclear you will be able to understand some days after.
To use the crystal ball light at least one candle behind the ball (two candles are the best but you can use more if you want). If you haven’t got a candle or you cannot light one, you can use the light of the moon - but candles are the very best as I experienced. After some time you will get visions, senses or feelings which you will find “strange”, “out of your mind”. Write them on a piece of paper or into your BOS, and think about it for some minutes. You can meditate with them if you want.
The best crystal ball is one without or with very few inclusions and joints; the ball must be transparent or translucent. That’s allright if it is not an evenly polished piece - if you buy a nature-formed spherical one, it would not be perfectly smooth. You can find lot of balls made of glass - it’s good too. The genuine beryllium or quartz balls are very expensive and rare.
If you cannot afford a crystal ball: get a transparent glass cup and fill it with clear water. Light the candles behind the cup or reflect the moonlight with it. (In some traditions there is an esbat ritual, when the witches use their water-filled cauldron to reflect the moonlight: it’s the same thing.) The shining light in the water can function like a genuine crystal ball; the main thing is your intuition, so if you cannot afford a genuine crystal ball, you’d better keep up your courage.
