It is a very dividive topic because many people don’t believe in afterlife at all. They think you just cannot live any longer after death, there is nothing after death. Others think that there is something: there is heaven, hell or reincarnation: some say you die and you get into a new body right after death, others say you spend some time in a temporary place and after you found out you’re dead, you will get a new body - you will get reincarnated. It doesn’t matter which theory you believe - once in everyone’s life happens a death when you will left here alone with tons of burning questions - maybe your loved one died in an accident after you had to wrangle or just dies suddenly and unexpected because he/she was very young etc. So you just start to believe someway in afterlife.
Honouring the dead is an immemorial rule. It is different depending on what tradition you observe, but in every traditions there is at least one day in the year when people celebrate the deceased ones. This is called Samhain or Hallowmas, Halloween, All Saint’s Day mostly. Some groups set a new moon next to this feats and that will be their feast day. The practice is to regale the dead somehow: people put plates on the table to the empty seats like there were someone, others make food and drink sacrifices during the dinner, in some traditions they dig out the dead bodies and sit them next to the dining table like they were still alive.
It is not practical to exhume your dead granny nowadays because it is an offense against the law in almost all countries of the world, but you can still communicate with her in other ways.
One method is the conscious dreaming. It is called lucid dreaming too. It is a type of dreaming when the dreamer becomes aware that they are dreaming. It needs some kind of practice, I’m sure that during the first try it won’t be successful. If you get into lucid dreaming you can call your deceased ones and ask the questions to them. Maybe they will not be able to say clear words but you get your answers somehow, like pictures or feelings and so on.
Another way is to get in trance. You can get in trance with the sound of a drum, a flute or some kind of rhytmical music made with an easy music instrument. You should practice this before you start to work with the dead, it is not so easy to get in trance but I think it’s easier than the lucid dreaming.
You can use your divination tools to find your answers too. You know the symbolism of your tools, so if you ask your deceased to tell answers through the symbols of your cards, rune set or crystal ball, I bet you will find the answers. I found out that the best tools for me were the pendulum, my favorite tarot deck and the Ouija-board. You can make pendulum from your dead husband’s wedding ring too.
You can try out flame gazing too. It is similar to trance but way more easier. Go to the cemetery, sit before the tomb (do not sit ON it, it is very disrespectful!) and light a candle. Watch the flames and focus on the dead one. You will hear him/her soon.
